Congratulations to Ava Young on her remarkable achievement! As a 5th-year student from Portumna Community School, Co. Galway, Ava has been crowned the winner of the **National Europe Direct Soapbox Finals (17+ category)**, an incredible testament to her debating skills and intellect.
This year’s topic, **”A.I. is not a threat to humanity,”** sparked passionate arguments across the nation, with contestants debating fiercely through the Autumn season. Ava, representing the Europe Direct Portlaoise region, stood out among competitors and delivered a winning performance at the grand final, held at the **Royal College of Physicians in Dublin**.
Special thanks go to Ava’s mentor, **Ms. Liz Skelly**, for her guidance and support throughout the competition, and to her year head, **Ms. Edel Madden**, for attending today to celebrate Ava’s success.
This event marked the **14th annual Soapbox Competition**, an initiative supported by the European Commission and facilitated by the **Local Government Management Agency (LGMA)**, alongside eight Europe Direct centres across Ireland. The competition champions Ireland’s proud tradition of debate and provides a platform for participants to engage with significant contemporary issues.
Ava’s success highlights her eloquence and critical thinking and is an inspiration for young debaters nationwide. Well done, Ava!
